Maths

Maths is at the heart of the curriculum for all children. At Evercreech CofE Primary we strive to make children confident, proficient mathematicians by the time they leave us.

Aims of the Primary National Curriculum for Mathematics

The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure:

  • All children will become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • All children will be able to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • All children will be able to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and nonroutine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Long Term Maths Overview for Evercreech CofE Primary

Progression of skills - our 'Golden Threads' of knowledge.

We firmly believe that each step of learning should build on a foundation of prior learning.  We take a spiralised approach to learning to ensure that children frequently re-visits concepts, topics and themes to gain a greater depth of understanding; this aids their future progression.

Please find below our progression of skills for each core area of maths learning.

Curriculum Intent - September 2024

Our curriculum is designed to maximise opportunities for learning from Day 1.  To aid progression, we allow children to explore, clarify, contextualise and practise their skills through daily application.  Children should be able to demonstrate their understanding of each topic that builds over their time with us.

Children must be able to relate and make connections with their learning through recalling known facts and concepts that can then be applied to a range of other mathematical reasoning and problem solving.

We aim for all children to become confident learners who can demonstrate resilience and critical thinking skills to prepare them for each stage of their learning.  We do this by:

  • Ensuring our children have access to a high-quality maths curriculum that is both challenging and enjoyable.
  • Providing quality first teaching to all learners.
  • Providing opportunities for children to recall concepts and facts daily through our 'Early Bird Maths' challenges.
  • Exposure to high-level questioning and thinking in lessons.
  • Involving our pupils in a variety of additional mathematical learning opportunities to encourage a love of learning.
  • Using meaningful contexts when applying their maths knowledge.
  • Insisting our pupils reason for their mathematical choices and use the most efficient method.
  • Ensuring our pupils are confident mathematicians, so they are not afraid to take risks or be resilient with problem solving.
  • Fully developing independent learners with inquisitive minds who have secure mathematical foundations and interest in self-improvement.
  • Having high expectations of all learners to achieve the requirements set out in the National Curriculum.
